ON THE ROAD AGAIN

As Wille so aptly said it....
"On the road again,
Just can't wait to get on the road again
like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends
insisting that the world keep turning our way
AND WE CAN'T WAIT TO GET ON THE ROAD AGAIN"
ROAD TRIP- a journey via automobile

I guess driving the 22,500 miles to the Arctic Ocean last summer wasn't enough. So after overpacking the SUV again we are off and running to celebrate the open road. This year we are headed to the Eastern half of the good ol'USA on up to St. Edwards Island and Newfoundland. More family, friends, Fishers, faith and forests. Will we qualify as Professional Road Trippers? Is this the Baby Boomer version of hitchhiking? Does Dashboarding count as exercise? So glad I can pack the "extras" and not pay "extra" and so love not having to stand in line to take off my shoes to change states. Besides it's an excellent way to shed some skin and live out loud. Check out the schedule and see if you're on the trip tick. Our most valuable souvenir are the hugs and stories we can't wait to share. Look over at the archived blogs on the right side as it stores the "older" blog entries there....don't want you to miss the trip from day one!

CONFIRMED ROADIES

After last summers "once in a life time road trip" we were hooked-if bored one evening see pamelacollins.blogspot.com (North to Alaska) for sordid details. There are plenty of reasons to hit the road and celebrate America's (and Canada too!) cultural heritage and natural wonders. Although we haven't experienced the meandering version-our trip is kinda planned and suits our purpose. Our focus are the FIVE F'S (family, friends, fishers, faith, forests). With the blessing of health and time we are free to visit and experience our F's. We have also learned the way to a healthy life style on a long road trip....goal for this trip is to eat green and healthy- no more Bubba's Jerky and Corn Dogs. Bubba is even bringing his Vita Mixer. Nothing like a Slimey I mean green smoothie to start the day off. Pleep only indulges in the banana smoothies...no green for the Pleepmeister. And yes there has been a new addition to the Collins Road Family- Pleep now has a sister- Pleetisha (aka Sis). After he laid down the rules of the road to Sis and made it clear who is in charge of this rig she smiled sweetly and said "you bet Bro!" So come along for the ride- Happy Trails!

DAY 42 FRIDAY BADDECK FRIDAY FERRY TO NEWFOUNDLAND

NO RESERVATIONS
And sometimes we get lucky.  We stayed at a lovely spot in Baddeck, on the water of course and quite a little tourist town.

Room on the first floor please.  At this age  when the choice is between a view and not schlepping up and down stairs we choose the later.  As long as Bubba can pull his ride up to the door...all that Green Slimey action- he is a happy camper.  Me?  The old Boca used to inspect room after room deciding which room was the best for her...those days are few and far between.  Bubba and Pleep figure Sis' tolerance and fine manners are rubbing off on her.  Or at this point who gives a rip....where's the Thistledown Pub please?

What I love about Bubba he ALWAYS tells me a new story...after 34 years he knows all of my shtick inside and out ....so while drinking a cold Moosehead he mentioned when he got back from Viet Nam in 1968 he was only 20 and not the legal age to buy beer.  He lived in Sarasota Florida with his Mom after getting out of the Army. And had his Mom (the non drinking oh so sweet Methodist) buy the beer.  Interesting concept, you can fight for your country but can't drink the beer.  But after several Mom runs to the liquor store, Bubba tired of "Mom's help" and got into disguise- bathing trunks and a  "muscle t shirt".  He would confidently swagger up to the check out counter and feign "oh man, forgot my wallet, we're going to the beach and I only brought cash, then he would point to his little army soldier tattoo and say Vet".  This always worked.  Oh you cleaver little Bubala!

Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site
Baddeck's favorite son.  After purchasing land here in 1895 he established a summer estate- complete with research laboratories, working with the deaf (Helen Keller) and continued inventing.  These Scots are a working people. They are very proud of their "native" son.
Time to head out to the Ferry to Newfoundland.....this place caught Pleeps eye and begged Bubba to stop in for a "Chick".Good idea Pleep.  Always time for a Chick....hmmmm.

ATLANTIC VISION, Our Ferry to Newfoundland
Was built in Kiel, Germany in 2002 and now chartered by Marine Atlantic since 2008 going back and forth from Nova Scotia to New Foundland and Labrador.  It is 650 long and holds up to 531 cars, 800 people and can travel at up to speeds of 27 knots (remember 20 knots is 23 mph).  The six hour trip (one way $169 for car and Bubba and Boca- they let Pleep and Sis on at no charge).  It is 98 nautical miles (113 land miles) from North Sydney/Cape Breton/Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques/ New Foundland.  6 hours?  Ok Ms. Mostly in a hurry-didn't the Nova Scotian's  teach you...

"IF YOU SURRENDER COMPLETELY TO THE MOMENTS AS THEY PASS, YOU LIVE MORE RICHLY THOSE MOMENTS"                  Anne Morrow Lindberg

What a surprise to find such a modern and comfortable "ferry boat".

Pleep ad Sis made themselves right at home in the Kids Pirate Playroom.... and now of course the Pleepmeister is sporting an eye patch and aching for a tattoo.  We have enough tats Pleep.

And Bubba waits patiently for his family while reading Newt Gingrich's book "Grant Comes East"- the aftermath of Gettysburg.  A novel?  But in this version the what if  the south won at Gettysburg.  A novel?  A what if?  This book was on the best seller list and ol'Boca just doesn't get it?  And you can bet we are going BACK to Gettyburgh now that Bubs has read THE book.

Bubba asked Boca why she wrote all over the book commenting "just because you are mad at him don't wreck my book."  Oh heck, yes, Bubba, Boca is still p o'd at her pal for being such a QUITTER...hey how about this - THE QUITTER CAMPAIGN IN 2012 - THE GINGRICH PALIN TICKET...QUITTERS UNITE!  Oh Bubba, after 34 years of being married to a Serb you know we have a "long" memory...and I know you are grateful it's not as good as it used to be.

WHILE BOCA WAITS PATIENTLY FOR ALL OF THEM....SWAT!  SWAT!  AND ANOTHER SWAT!  PASS THE "REPELLENT" PLEASE.....  Boca was one with Lindberg's quote.
