A frequent visitor to Maine's north woods, he well understood the healing powers of this vast virgin landscape. By preserving such wilderness, he wrote, we are also ensuring our own survival- not just physically, but spiritually. Well said and now I remember why Bubba and I visited Arcadia NP on our honeymoon. Duh.
Acadia boasts varied and dramatic scenery including a coastline of chiseled granite, the ocean dotted with islands, 17 mountain peaks, close to 12 glacial lakes and ponds, and Somes Sound-the only fjord in the lower 48. Oddly, in shape Mount Desert Island resembles a lobster claw-how fitting! Lots of trails to hike and loads of bird watching. Park Loop road is 20 miles and an easy ride. This park is one of the top 10 most visited national parks (one of 58). Initially established in 1916 with 6,000 acres the park now boasts more than 40,000 acres.
Cadillac Mountain boasts a 1530 foot summit, the tallest on the Atlantic Coast north of Brazil. The view is panoramic and unparalleled-of the islands around the main Desert Island, dappled Frenchman and Blue Hill bay, the whole of the park and beyond that much of Maine itself. Sunrise, Sunset! Not a blue sky sunny day but never the less amazing and oh so pretty!
There is no symbol of the Maine coast more stirring than the lighthouse. These beacons have guided mariners through Maine's many rocky ledges and pea soup fogs for more than 200 years. Maine, with more than 60, is only second to Michigan in its number of lighthouses. Today the lighthouses are automated and monitored by the US Coast Guard and some of the decommissioned lighthouses are being put to use as bed and breakfasts. Can you see Boca sleeping in one? Ding Bling Ding- don't get any ideas Bubba Lighthouse Keeper Wannabe. Arcadia boasts 5 lighthouses arrayed around the surrounding bays. But he was most impressed with "BUBBA DRIVE" and it's special Bubba Lighthouse....
THAR SHE BLOWS
And then he had this hairy brained idea of kayaking.....kay whating? Bubba aren't there Whales and other creatures out here? Paddle Boca Paddle! We are going in a circle! Bubba this is no pleasant diversion!
WHEN IT COMES TO LOBSTER EATING IF YOU WANT TO WALK THE WALK YOU HAVE TO TALK THE TALK
So after all that hiking and kayaking and lighthouse visiting- Pleep and Sis beg for some more Maine Chow, meaning Lobster of course... Pleep learned how to talk like a Lobsterman-oilers (foul weather gear), hauling (goin out to haul traps and catch bugs), sou'westerner (yellow rain hat), buoy (floating markers for the traps), pot (lobster trap), snapper (undersized lobsters thrown back), bug (the bug eyed lobster), pot warp (rope), gaff (6 ft long hook), crate ( plastic container used for storing lobsters in water), and car (underwater pen).
